A Biblical look at Angels - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Angels, Satan and Demons)

- Dr. David McClain (Nov 10 - Jan/11)

Hours before his crucifixion Jesus was before the Roman governor Pontius Pilate.  The only accusation against Jesus that mattered at all to Pilate was “he claims he is the King of Jews!”So Pilate asks, “Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said, “I am!”  What is noteworthy is about His answer is the qualification he gave to it.  Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."Jesus answer is significant.  He references a kingdom, a realm, a reality that is beyond the physical realm and cannot be experienced with the five senses.  It is beyond the prevue of science and physics and is not represented by political figures and has no political agenda.  If we believe Jesus, this kingdom is real and is central to the Christian faith. The Bible gives us numerous glimpses of what this realm is like and how it affects our world.  While Jesus tells us we will someday inhabit this kingdom we learn we will not be alone.  We are told that we will live among angels.  In our modern culture in which we are often told, “this world is all there is” we are often reticent to speak about this other world and the beings that already inhabit it.  Yet the Bible speaks of them often (from Genesis to Revelation- written over a 1,500 year period) and their reality is acknowledged by all of the 40 biblical authors.  Who are these creatures?  Where do they come from?  What do they do?  Why do we not see them?  What impact, if any, do they have in this world and why should we care? C.S. Lewis made the following oft-quoted remark: “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils (and the angels). One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them."
